University of Southern California Sports Division 1 Fellowship
The mission of the University of Southern California Sports Physical Therapy Fellowship in Division I Athletics is to graduate advanced practitioners of sports physical therapy who will specialize in Division I Athletics and express their education through excellence in the practice of clinical skills, both in the clinic, in the Division I athletic training room, and on the Division I athletic field, who will continue to expand the body of knowledge in sports medicine by conducting and publishing clinical research, and who will make a lasting contribution to their local and professional community.

Fellowship graduates will demonstrate advanced skill in assessment, evaluation, and treatment in both the Division I clinical setting/athletic training room and on-field management of athletic injuries. The program will lead to competence in primary care issues that relate to Division I athletes.

Fellowship program goals will be achieved through a combination of formal and informal educational methods including, but not limited to:
    • Direct patient care in a Division I athletic training room.
    • Mentored clinical practice. Clinical mentors include USC sports and orthopedic physical therapy faculty.
    • Mentoring with sports-medicine physicians via care provision in Division I specialty clinics.
    • Coursework within the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy Continuing Education Department.
    • Division I specific case report or scholarly paper submitted for presentation or publication.

Supervised clinical mentorship and on-field experience are key components of the USC Sports Fellowship Program. A typical week includes 20 hours of clinical practice, 4 hours of mentored clinical practice in Division I physical therapy, 3 hours of mentoring with physicians in the physician’s office located in the athletic training room, and 3-6 hours of on-field experience in a Division I athletic setting. The remaining hours are divided into diverse didactic work, including compliance review, literature reviews and instruction in theory and technique.
