UPMC Centers for Rehab Services Geriatric Residency
The UPMC Centers for Rehab Services Geriatric Physical Therapy Residency Program began development in 2011 with the collaboration of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh. The program was designed as a 16-month residency to provide licensed therapists with advanced training in examination, clinical decision-making, and evidence-based interventions for the older individual. The program emphasizes evidence-based practice and facilitates the use of research and outcome measurements. In addition to the clinical experience, residents concurrently complete didactic education courses in home study format from continuing education providers, in continuing education weekend format, and in program-created independent study modules.

The program was created under the guidelines of the APTA Residency Credentialing program. The CRS Geriatric Residency program, as it is designed to ensure a diverse experience, provides a mentored clinical practice and specialty observations under the supervision of clinicians which include: both ABPTS-certified and non-certified but experienced physical therapists; physicians with specialties in geriatrics, neurology, family practice, and more as appropriate; occupational therapists and speech therapists; prosthetists and orthotists; social services personnel; reimbursement specialists; and nursing staff at all levels of care.

The program as it stands today is housed within various UPMC inpatient and CRS outpatient clinics, and operates in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, Department of Physical Therapy. Our close association with the other CRS residency programs allows the use of shared resources and faculty across disciplines. The program has been designed to advance the competent physical therapist through education, mentoring, and professional service into a board certified clinical specialist in the area of geriatric physical therapy.
