University of Kentucky Sports Residency
UK Sports Rehabilitation is part of the University of Kentucky Healthcare system. The resident will work solely at our Turfland location where both UK Sports Rehabilitation and UK Sports Medicine are located and will work approximately 30 hours/week in the clinic. We currently schedule one patient every 45 minutes which allows ample time for patient examination and treatment. As an employee of UK Healthcare, the resident will have access to numerous benefits to facilitate learning including access to the medical library and a monetary continuing education benefit. As an employee of UK Sports Rehabilitation, residents also have access to weekly Sports Medicine medical conferences and physician shadowing. Due to our close working relationship with the School of Physical Therapy, residents will also have access to instructors and research labs. As most of our sports patients are involved with middle and high school athletics, the resident will be primarily involved with athletic coverage of these two age groups. At this time the sports resident is not expected to work with UK athletics on campus for athletic coverage.
We have developed the UK Sports Residency Program to fulfill all of the criteria set out by the Description of Specialty Practice (DSP). However, as we are part of a large entity with many opportunities available, we also feel we will have the flexibility to cater to more specific goals of the resident. For instance, if the resident would like to become more involved with concussion management or running gait assessment, there are avenues to become more involved with these topics than required by the DSP. The UK Sports Rehabilitation Residency Program will provide a unique opportunity for the resident to work with physicians, trainers, therapists, and professors towards a common goal of excellent patient care as well as learning and growing as a sports physical therapist.
